Because of factors including changing attitudes towards pets, evolving legal standards and the publicity surrounding Leona Helmsley's $$ left for her dog, Americans, in general, are increasingly including pets in their wills or, providing for them with free-standing documents such as a pet trust (which can go into effect immediately upon the owners death or disability) as opposed to Wills can be held up in court.
Society has evolved: the aging of the population, delayed child bearing, carrer minded couples, etc. has contributed to an attitude shift. People now view their animals less as pets and more as members of the family getting specialty meals, nice coats and sweaters, gourmet treats, and inclusions in wills. The Leona Helmsley court case prompted many people to think about planning for their own pets' continued care.
